Have you ever been caught in the “not enough” trap? By that I mean, it can feel like your job/family/car/body (or you name it) somehow isn’t enough or doesn’t measure up?
It’s so easy to feel that way nowadays, especially with social media showing us images of the supposedly fabulous lives being lived by everyone else.
It reminds me of a fable I heard years ago, about a dog that found a piece of meat while he was out exploring. (Yes, I love dog stories!)
This dog was overjoyed to find the treat, so he took it home to enjoy it in peace. In order to get home, he had to cross over a branch above a running stream.
When he was halfway across the stream, he looked down and saw his shadow – except instead of recognizing it as his reflection, he thought it was another dog carrying a piece of meat.
And he wanted that other dog’s meat, very much. So he snapped at it to steal it away … and you know what happened next, right? The meat he’d been carrying fell into the stream and was quickly swept away.
How often is it that we don’t appreciate what we have, and waste precious resources chasing illusions and shadows?
Remember: not everything we see is as it appears, so don’t trade away a single moment of today’s happiness.
