You’ve probably heard someone say that when you make a change that you should make it for you and not for others.
It’s implying that if you change your lifestyle, your career, or your relationship that the only way it’ll stick is if you really want it for “you”.
But what does that mean?
How do you know if the reasons that you want something are really for you?
And what if you come to find out that your reasons for change are really about someone else?
Here’s my non-scientific based answer…
Who cares?
Sometimes I think we over-complicate life. Not because we mean to, but because we want to do it right or come up with a reason of why something didn’t work out.
I’m a huge believe that change comes from action. So whether you’ve decided to start eating healthier because you truly want to or because you want to set a better example for your kids… who cares?
What matters is that you’re doing something good for your body and in the end that’s all the reason I need.
Different things motivate different people. It’s like Sly Stone (of Sly and the Family Stone) said: Different strokes for different folks.
There are many reasons that we choose to change our actions, and there are many reasons that those changes stick and become habits. What matters is this… you want to change a behavior for a reason that matters to you.
For me, my kids are everything. I’ll eat better, I’ll be more polite, I’ll be more careful with my words and on and on. My kids matter to me and I believe that my habits will in some ways become theirs.
There is no right or wrong way to make a change. What matters is that you’re improving yourself, that you’re healthy, and that you’re happy. Let everyone else squabble over the semantics. You focus on the change and make it into habits.
