I’m sure you’ve heard of the TV show called “The Biggest Loser”, right? It’s cycled through 17 seasons, 3 hosts, and 10 different trainers, but it’s most notably known for the dramatic weight loss that most of the participants go through.
The season finale never disappoints. The final 3 contestants are weighed in for their final weight loss numbers and the person who loses the most weight wins the grand prize.
A lot of people watch this show and it’s mostly for entertainment reasons. Each week we want to see contestant A push himself farther than he (and us) ever thought possible and we want to see contestant B throw another epic temper tantrum as she swears she’s following the program but fails to lose any weight.
It’s entertainment. I get it.
The problem is it’s also scary for me as a health and fitness coach because the extreme workout and diet plans are not safe for most people to follow without 24/7 supervision of doctors.
Even then I wouldn’t recommend it. I wouldn’t want to follow any plan that required constant monitoring.
A few months ago, CNN and the NY Times ran articles exposing that most contestants on “The Biggest Loser” end up gaining a lot of their weight back – even those grand prize winners, but this isn’t nearly as entertaining as the show so you hear so little about it.
Look, a dramatic change in one’s life is sometimes good. I can remember the day one of my best friends decided to stop smoking cigarettes. She quit cold turkey and was done with it. That was over 15 years ago. That is a good dramatic change.
However, extreme workout plans and eating plans rarely work. They’re hard to stick to and most end up causing more harm than good.
Maybe you know someone that starting running a mile a day after years of sitting on the couch? A few weeks later they probably got injured. Or we all know someone (maybe ourselves?) that started some popular diet, lost a bit of weight, and then for whatever reason stopped the diet and gained the weight back (plus a little more).
This type of stuff doesn’t work. It never does when it comes to eating and working out.
What Does Work?
I’ll tell you, but know this… it isn’t nearly as exciting as “The Biggest Loser” would have us believe. It all comes down to finding a plan that:
- Matches your goals
- Matches your lifestyle
- Is sustainable for you
- Includes accountability
We specialize in helping every day busy moms and dads find the plan that works for them. We sit down together for a 20-minute consultation and list out what your goals are and why. From there we’ll tell you a little about our service and how we can specifically help you.
Together we’re going to change your life by working a plan that meets the 4 criteria above. It’s time for something different. It’s time for something that really works and moves you toward the person you want to be.
